What is a Steak Sandwich?

A steak sandwich is a delicious and satisfying meal that typically consists of a thinly sliced steak, often grilled or pan-seared, served on a slice of bread or ciabatta, and often complemented with a variety of toppings and condiments. Depending on the type of steak used, how it’s cooked, and what toppings are added, the taste of a steak sandwich can vary. In general, the steak provides a rich, meaty flavor that is complemented by the bread and other ingredients.

The origin of the steak sandwich is somewhat unclear. However, it is believed to have originated in the United States in the early 20th century. People began experimenting with different ways to enjoy steak, including sandwiches, as steak became more widely available and affordable. Over time, different regional styles and variations of the steak sandwich have evolved, with each region adding its own twist and ingredients.

Overall, the steak sandwich offers a flavorful combination of meat, bread, and toppings that appeals to many palates and is popular for its hearty and satisfying nature.

Steak Sandwich Ingredients

  • Ribeye Steak: The star of the sandwich, ribeye steaks offer a rich, beefy taste and tender texture with perfect cooking.
  • Tomato: Fresh tomato slices add juiciness and a burst of acidity to balance the steak’s richness.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Melted cheddar adds creaminess and savory flavor to complement beef.
  • Ciabatta: Hearty ciabatta provides a sturdy yet chewy sandwich base and holds all the ingredients together.
  • Salad Mix: Crisp, fresh lettuce adds crunch and a hint of bitterness to enhance the overall texture and flavor profile.
  • Barbecue Sauce: Spicy and sweet, barbecue sauce adds depth of taste and a hint of smokiness to the steak.
  • Garlic and Onions: These aromatic ingredients provide a hearty base and enhance the overall umami taste of the sandwich.
  • Mustard and mayonnaise: Combining mustard and mayonnaise creates a creamy, tangy spread that moisturizes and flavors the sandwich.
  • Brown sugar and white wine: These ingredients are often used to marinate or glaze the steak, adding sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • Thyme and Rosemary: These fragrant herbs add earthy, floral notes that complement the steak’s richness.
  • Butter: Typically used to toast the ciabatta, butter adds golden crispness and rich, buttery flavor.
  • Salt and Pepper: Essential seasonings that bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients and add depth to the overall flavor of the sandwich.

Chef Recipe Tips:

  • You can use New York steak, filet mignon, or even T-bone.
  • You can add pickled peppers and pickles to the sandwich.

How to Prepare Steak Sandwich Ahead

The best thing about this sandwich is that you can make a big batch and either put the filling in the fridge or freeze it. This is perfect for meal prep. It’s a quick meal to have on hand for those busy weekdays. Because this meal can be warmed up in the oven on a baking sheet, it is super quick, easy, and requires minimal cleanup.

It is better not to assemble your sandwiches until you are ready to eat. This will help prevent soggy bread and rubbery cheese. Instead, I recommend you refrigerate or freeze the filling ahead of time and then assemble your sandwiches on the go. Here’s how to do it:

Refrigerating

Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, your steak stuffing will stay fresh for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to eat: Assemble your sandwiches and bake them whole in the oven. To keep them warm, place them on a serving platter and cover with aluminum foil before you serve them.

Freezing

Freeze your fillings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 weeks. Defrost in the refrigerator when ready to eat and heat in the oven just like the chilled fillings above!

What Goes with Steak Sandwiches?

What’s a sandwich without a side dish, right? Below are a few of my favorite dishes that go great with a steak sandwich:

  • French fries or potato wedges: Crispy potatoes are a classic choice, and add a satisfying crunch to balance out the tenderness of the steak.
  • Side Salad: A refreshing contrast to the richness of the steak is a fresh green salad with vinaigrette dressing.
  • Slaw: Creamy coleslaw adds a cool, crunchy element that pairs well with steak.
  • Grilled vegetables: Add a flavorful and nutritious component to your meal with grilled vegetables such as peppers, onions, and zucchini.
  • Onion rings: Crispy onion rings are a delicious, indulgent accompaniment to the steak sandwich.
  • Sweet potato fries: For a sweet and savory contrast to steak, try baked or fried sweet potato fries.

This steak sandwich recipe is as good as the takeout sub shops of Southeastern Massachusetts! I think this is about as close as you can get at home. Freezing the steak the day before makes it easy to cut into very thin slices.
